A Practical 1 Day Point-of-Care Ultrasound Course

Ultrasound plays a central role in the assessment of patients with hepatobiliary and pancreatic disease. This course is designed for gastroenterologists and surgeons who wish to integrate focused ultrasound into their clinical practice. A targeted bedside examination can provide immediate information on liver size and contour, the presence of ascites, biliary dilatation, gallbladder pathology and gross pancreatic abnormalities, allowing ultrasound findings to be integrated directly into the clinical assessment.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is intended to complement, rather than replace, formal diagnostic imaging. Used within a defined clinical scope, it can help answer focused questions at the bedside, support clinical decision-making and identify patients who require more comprehensive radiological assessment.

This intensive one-day course provides a practical introduction to focused hepatobiliary and upper abdominal ultrasound. Participants will develop the practical skills required to perform a focused hepatobiliary ultrasound examination and recognise common clinically relevant abnormalities. The course emphasises a systematic scanning approach together with the appropriate use, strengths and limitations of POCUS.

No previous ultrasound experience is required.

Course Format

This course uses a flipped classroom approach.

Participants receive access to the Ultrasound Academy online learning portal several weeks before the course, where they complete approximately 6 hours of self-paced learning.

Completion of the online modules ensures that the face-to-face course is devoted almost entirely to supervised practical scanning and clinical case discussion.

Participants practise on modern, high-quality ultrasound systems, with a max instructor-to-candidate ratio of 1:5 ensuring adequate hands-on scanning time, individual feedback and personalised mentoring.

Clinical Applications

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic physics of ultrasound relevant to upper abdominal image acquisition
  • Select the appropriate probe and optimise image quality using depth, gain and focal zone
  • Optimise probe handling and manipulation to acquire the required hepatobiliary and pancreatic views
  • Recognise common ultrasound artefacts relevant to abdominal scanning

  • Acquire a systematic set of views of the liver in longitudinal and transverse planes
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative assessment of liver size and recognise hepatomegaly
  • Assess the hepatic capsular contour and recognise an abnormal irregular or nodular surface
  • Recognise focal intrahepatic lesions including simple and complex cysts, haemangiomas and metastases
  • Identify intrahepatic bile duct dilatation and distinguish dilated ducts from adjacent vascular structures
  • Perform a focused examination for free perihepatic intraperitoneal fluid

  • Evaluate the gallbladder in longitudinal and transverse planes and assess its lumen, wall and surrounding tissues
  • Recognise common gallbladder abnormalities, including gallstones, sludge, wall thickening and features suggestive of acute cholecystitis
  • Differentiate between acute and chronic cholecystitis
  • Identify the extrahepatic biliary tree, visualise and measure the common bile duct where technically possible
  • Recognise common bile duct dilatation and integrate intrahepatic and extrahepatic duct appearances into a focused assessment of biliary obstruction

  • Identify the pancreas and acquire focused views of the pancreatic head, body and tail where technically possible
  • Recognise gross pancreatic abnormalities, including focal or cystic lesions and pancreatic duct dilatation
  • Recognise the technical limitations of transabdominal pancreatic ultrasound and indications for further formal imaging
